This checklist helps small publishers understand the boring ads.txt basics. It does not change your ad settings or submit anything to an ad platform.
Use this checklist
- Open your live /ads.txt file in a browser.
- Confirm the file returns HTTP 200.
- Confirm the publisher ID matches your ad account.
- Confirm the seller line was copied exactly from the ad platform.
- Do not include passwords, API tokens, or private keys.
- Remember that publisher IDs in ads.txt are public by design.
- Check the file again after every deploy that changes public files.
- Keep internal config files blocked from public access.
- Do not guess your ads.txt line.
- Do not treat ads.txt as a replacement for useful site content.
How to use it without overthinking
Open your live website and go through the list one item at a time. Mark anything that is missing, unclear, broken, or too vague. The goal is not perfection. The goal is to make the site easier to trust, easier to navigate, and easier to share before you spend time promoting it.
